LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
What is it? (Definition taken from the US Green Building Council Website) The LEED (Leadership in Energy &
Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ is a voluntary, consensus-based standard to support
and certify successful green building design, construction and operations. LEED is transforming the
marketplace by providing a nationally recognized certification system to promote integrated, whole-building
design practices in the building industry.
Dave's position on LEED
All of the design and construction goals of LEED are great. I get excited about designing to protect the
environment and save on natural resources, designing to save energy, and designing quality work
environments that will stand the test of time. I find it very interesting and challenging. Everyone who is in the
building industry should have high goals for designing with LEED to the greatest extent possible. LEED goals
are very comprehensive and beneficial to building owners.
Dave's position on LEED Building Certification
Whether you have a new or existing building, LEED Building Certification is a worthy goal. Is it necessary? No.
If you believe certifying your building is important to your company's image, then consider it. Before going that
direction, become aware of the requirements, costs, benefits, pitfalls, and recertification requirements
associated with this effort. We will be happy to include the appropriate LEED accredited professionals on our
design team to guide us through the process and maintain the required documentation from inception, through
design, to construction, and startup.
